Before you call: a quick checklist
- The brand and model number of the new faucet
- All the parts are in the box, and nothing is damaged
- The number of holes in your sink or countertop
- Whether the shutoff valves under the sink turn and fully stop the water
- For a touchless faucet: whether you'll use batteries or need an outlet under the sink
Clear out the cabinet under the sink before the appointment. It gives the pro room to work.
Pull-down and pull-out faucets
These need space under the sink for the hose to hang and slide. A garbage disposal, water filter or storage bins can get in the way. The counterweight has to be set at the right spot, or the spray head won't go back in. It's one of the most common problems with DIY installs.
Touchless faucets
A touchless faucet has a few more pieces than a standard one: a sensor, a solenoid valve and a control box, usually mounted to the cabinet wall. Most run on batteries. Some can use a plug-in adapter, which needs an outlet under the sink. Adding an outlet is electrical work and may need a separate electrician. After install, the sensor range is checked so it doesn't turn on when you walk past.
Installing during a remodel
If you're getting a new countertop or vanity top, choose the faucet before the top is cut or drilled. The hole count and spacing have to match. For undermount sinks, a single-hole faucet makes the countertop cleaner and easier to wipe down.
New faucet leaking after install?
If you installed a faucet yourself and it's leaking, don't keep tightening the fittings. Overtightening cracks plastic parts and crushes seals. The usual causes are a cross-threaded supply line, a missing washer, or a quick-connect that didn't fully click in. See leaking faucet repair or just call.

- Removing the old faucet and cleaning the sink deck
- Checking that the shutoff valves work
- New supply lines where needed
- Setting the faucet level and secure, so it won't wobble later
- Flushing the lines before the aerator goes on, so debris doesn't clog the new faucet
- Testing every connection with hot and cold running
