Bathroom Faucet Repair & Replacement in Sultan, WA

A bathroom sink faucet is small, but a drip, a wobbly handle or a stopper that won't hold gets old fast. Most of these are quick fixes.

Know your bathroom faucet

Bathroom faucets come in a few basic layouts. Knowing which one you have helps when you call, and it matters if you're buying a replacement.

LayoutHow to spot it
Single-holeOne handle on top of or beside the spout, mounted through one hole.
Centerset (4-inch)Two handles and the spout on one base plate. Handles are 4 inches apart, center to center.
Widespread (8-inch)Two handles and the spout are separate pieces, usually 8 inches apart.
Vessel or wall-mountTall spout for a bowl sink, or a faucet coming out of the wall.

A new faucet has to match your sink's hole spacing, unless you're changing the sink too.

Common bathroom faucet problems

Drips after you turn it off

On a two-handle faucet, one side's cartridge or washer has worn. Feel the drip to tell which side it's coming from. On a single-handle faucet, it's usually the cartridge. More on fixing a dripping faucet.

One handle is stiff or hard to turn

Mineral buildup or a dry cartridge makes one handle harder to turn than the other. Replacing that side's cartridge usually brings it back to normal.

Handle is loose or turns too far

Bathroom handles are often held by a small set screw hidden under a cap. When it backs out, the handle wobbles. If the teeth inside the handle are stripped, the handle needs replacing.

Stopper won't stay up or won't seal

The pop-up drain is part of most bathroom faucet sets. It's controlled by a lift rod behind the spout and a pivot rod under the sink. If the stopper won't hold water or won't lift, the pivot nut or clip usually needs adjusting. A slow leak at the pivot nut is common too.

Weak flow

Bathroom aerators are small and clog easily. If the flow is weak or splashes sideways, the aerator is the first thing to check. See low water pressure at a faucet for other causes.

Replacing a bathroom faucet

Replacement usually makes sense when the finish is worn through, the faucet is leaking from the body, or you're updating the vanity. A new faucet usually comes with its own drain assembly, so the stopper gets replaced at the same time.

If you're putting in a new vanity top, pick the faucet first, or at least before the top is drilled. Then the holes will match. For a faucet you've already bought, see bathroom faucet installation.

Bathroom faucets in Sultan homes

Many homes in Sultan's older neighborhoods still have their original centerset faucets, with shutoff valves under the vanity that haven't been touched in decades. Those valves sometimes need replacing before the faucet can be worked on. It's worth asking about if your home is older.

Homes on private wells outside town, such as those up Sultan Basin Road, can see sediment clog bathroom aerators and cartridges faster. Cleaning the aerator regularly helps.

Common questions

Can you replace a bathroom faucet without replacing the sink?

Yes, as long as the new faucet matches the hole layout of your sink: single-hole, 4-inch centerset or 8-inch widespread. Measure between the outside holes, center to center, before you buy.

Which is easier to repair, a single-handle or two-handle faucet?

Both are usually straightforward. A single-handle faucet has one cartridge. A two-handle faucet has one per side, and often only the worn side needs replacing.

Why does my bathroom faucet drip after I turn it off?

A worn cartridge or washer is the usual cause. On a two-handle faucet, check whether the drip is hot or cold to tell which side it's coming from.

Why won't my sink stopper hold water?

The pop-up assembly probably needs adjusting. The pivot rod under the sink and the clip on the lift rod control how far the stopper closes. A worn seal on the stopper can also let water through.
